On the internet I had found the
Web Site of Kevin Modera Guide Service and after several e-mails back and
forth with Mary Toy, Kevin's partner, I had engaged Kevin to take us
fishing. As we also wanted to snorkel the small reef just off the
beach at Laughing Bird Caye National Park, we decided to combine fishing
and snorkeling into one trip with a Lobster Shore Lunch thrown in.
We met Kevin at the Dock in
Placencia at 7:00 am and headed east to a place which Kevin had, before we
left Florida, promised me that if I would bring down some Crazy Charlie
Flies, he would guarantee that we would catch a Bonefish.
After about an hours boat ride, we
pulled in between two small Cayes and Kevin rigged up our spinning lines
(we did not bring Fly Rods with us) with a small sinker at the end of the
line and a crazy Charlie fly tied to a 1' loop in the line about two feet
up the line. These rigs were then cast out and allowed to slowly sink
to the bottom. On most casts the sinker never reached the bottom
before we had a Bonefish of anywhere from 1-1/2 to 3 Lbs on and running. We
fished in the same place for about 2-1/2 hours and boated a total of 24
Bonefish.
Kevin really impressed me as a
guide as he spent a great deal of time helping Norma catch Bonefish. He did
not neglect me but he did direct his talents and knowledge as a fishing
guide where they were needed and appreciated. Final tally, Me 10
Bonefish, Norma 14 Bonefish. Next time he helps me!
About 11:00 o'clock we left that
spot and headed in the direction of Laughing Bird Caye where we would
snorkel and have lunch. On the way we made several stops at small
reefs where Kevin would jump overboard with nothing but a pair of goggles
and disappear under water for what seemed like hours at a time (really 2-3
minutes) and would come up with a lobster which he would put in the bottom
of the boat.
At about noon we arrived at
Laughing Bird Caye and decided to go snorkeling before lunch. To
snorkel at Laughing Bird Caye, you just go in off of the beach as the reef
and drop off are only about 150 feet from shore. This makes it nice as you
don't have to go through the trouble of getting back in the boat without
loosing your fins or breaking something.
Kevin swam right along with us and
pointed out marine life that our untrained eyes did not even see until he
pointed them out. His vast knowledge of the marine life on the reef really
made snorkeling interesting.
We snorkeled for a couple of hours
and then went ashore where, after we all collected any kind of dry wood or
Coconut Husk, Kevin dug a shallow hole and built a nice fire. He then
cleaned the Lobster and some shrimp he had brought along and spread the
seafood out on a piece of aluminum foil. He spread chopped onion and other
veggies on top and seasoned with his secrete Creole seasonings and wrapped
the edges of the foil to enclose this mixture. He then sliced some
potatoes and onions on another sheet of foil and sprinkled cheese on top of
this with some seasonings and folded this into a pouch also. He then put
both pouches on a piece of wire mesh, which he had brought with him, over
the fire to cook while he prepared a melon salad.
I must, categorically say that the
meal was one of the tastiest and finest that I ever ate, anywhere. Of
course eating it after catching Bonefish all morning, having a marvelous 2
hours of snorkeling with an expert guide and having lunch on a wonderful
deserted island could not have had anything to do with it.
After cleaning up every speck of
mess and garbage, about 4:00 o'clock we headed back toward Placencia. On
the way a school of Dolphin swam and played along with us for quite some
time.
